Tree Roots in Drains

Tree roots are one of the most common causes of drain damage in the UK. Roots naturally seek out moisture and nutrients, and the joints and cracks in older drain pipes provide the perfect entry point. Once inside, roots grow rapidly, blocking the pipe and eventually causing it to collapse.

What to Look For

• Recurring blockages, especially in autumn and spring
• Slow drainage that gradually worsens
• Gurgling sounds from drains
• Sewage smells near trees or large shrubs
• Sinkholes near established trees
• CCTV shows fibrous material in the pipe

How We Diagnose the Problem

A CCTV drain survey clearly shows root ingress — you can see the roots penetrating joints and cracks on camera. We assess the extent of the intrusion and whether the roots have caused structural damage to the pipe beyond simply blocking it.

How We Fix It

We remove roots using mechanical cutting equipment and high-pressure jetting, then reline the affected pipe sections to seal all joints against future root entry. For severe cases where the pipe has been structurally compromised, excavation and replacement may be needed.
