What Is a Manhole Inspection Chamber?

A manhole or inspection chamber is an access point built into a drainage system that allows engineers to inspect, clean, and repair the pipes. They're located at changes of direction, junctions, and at regular intervals along pipe runs. Understanding your inspection chambers helps you maintain your drainage system and identify problems early.

What to Look For

• Manholes provide access for CCTV cameras and jetting equipment
• They're located at pipe junctions, bends, and changes of gradient
• Covers may be plastic, cast iron, or recessed for paving
• Older properties have brick-built chambers; modern ones use plastic
• The inside of a chamber shows pipe connections and flow direction
• Chambers should be checked periodically for damage and blockages

How We Diagnose the Problem

We inspect all manholes and inspection chambers during every drainage survey. We check the chamber structure, benching (the channels inside), covers, and frame condition. Damaged chambers can allow soil ingress that causes blockages downstream.

How We Fix It

We repair or replace damaged manholes, install new inspection chambers where access is needed, raise or lower covers to match finished surfaces, and replace damaged covers and frames. All work conforms to building regulations.
